Upper Iowa River Cleanup Coming in September

CRESCO Next month, scores of canoeists will scour the Upper Iowa River during a volunteer cleanup and river float.

The sixth annual Upper Iowa River Cleanup occurs Saturday, Sept. 30. Help clean the river while enjoying a relaxing day among the Upper Iowa's beautiful limestone bluffs.

Volunteers will pilot canoes and kayaks on the river, removing everything from pop cans to car parts. Participants have three volunteering options: 1) A short, two to four hour float. 2) A long, four to six hour float. 3) Clearing crew, which travels ahead of the floats and removes any obstructions using chainsaws.

Prospective volunteers should RSVP to Deb Keefe. Tell Deb your desired cleanup option.

Event check-in will occur from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Chimney Rock Canoe Rental and Campground (3312 Chimney Rock Road, Cresco). Volunteers should bring work clothes, closed-toe shoes, bug spray and chainsaws if they have them.

The event includes discounted camping ($10) Friday and Saturday night at Chimney Rock. Cleanup participants will also receive free canoe use during the event.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. After the cleanup, enjoy a potluck supper, local entertainment and a door prize drawing.

Last year, more than 100 volunteers participated in the cleanup, retrieving enough garbage to fill nearly two 10-wheel dump trucks. The program has been growing every year since its first outing in 2002, when it attracted roughly 20 volunteers.
