The Dubuque County Conservation Board has recently acquired ownership of a unique 160-acres located near Worthington. The property was purchased through a partnership with Dubuque and Jones County Chapters of Pheasants Forever, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and a wildlife Habitat Stamp Grant from the Iowa DNR.
The property is located 2 miles south of Worthington, just west of Highway 136 and represents a significant grassland for the County. Originally dominated by corn and pasture, the Dubuqueland Chapter of PF has made yearly habitat improvements to the area including restoration of native grasses, food plots and tree plantings.
Public hunting will be permitted on the area along with trapping, bird watching, hiking and cross country skiing. The area has attracted a wide variety of wildlife including rabbits, deer and pheasants, as well as some very rare non-game wildlife including Henslow sparrows and bobolinks. The site also attracts thousands of migrating monarch butterflies in the fall.
A small pond is found near the south end of the property which offers excellent habitat for waterfowl and aquatic wildlife. Future plans include deepening the pond to develop a quality fishing opportunity. The short gravel lane to the parking area will also be improved at the northeast corner of the property.
