Service Trip at Pohlman Prairie Preserve, April 16
Jim Fahrion, Carol (Butchie) and Gary Thompson, and Dick Worm cleared small cedar trees from Pohlman Prairie Preserve.
May 13-14 "Friday the 13th" Camping and Hiking
Jim Fahrion and Joe Garrity camped with Dick Worm at Faraway Farm. Joe and Dick tried out Joe's new tent to be used on the Alaska trip later. The really spooky part of the evening was spent seeing slides at Dick's home of Kilimanjaro, Peru, and Aconcagua climbs Joe had not seen.
Saturday forenoon was spent hiking at new places for all of us in Jackson County: the McNeil Nature Area between Preston and Miles and the Cottonville Conservation Area between Andrew and LaMotte. A nice rolling trail looped through a woodland at McNeil (future x-country skiing and snowshoeing area) and rugged, rocky bluff terrain was at Cottonville (more snowshoeing there for sure sometime.)
August 26-28 Group picnic and camping at Faraway Farm
No camping Friday night due to a stormy forecast, but no storms developed. But, before sprinkles arrived, Dick did get a washout on the trail from the pond down to the Mississippi River repaired ... in his own primitive way. Barb and Bill Cooey and Bill and Alaine Jamison joined Dick and Jane for the picnic potluck enjoying grilled steaks and burgers, lots of cutup melons and grapes, and soft graham cracker S'mores (sorry about that). Jamison's were introduced to almost all of the Faraway Farm trails and rated them good for future cross country skiing opportunities.
Neighbor Mike Marty along with Jim Rolling got out the Hempstead High telescope late Saturday evening for an excellent session of star gazing--waiting until Mars did at last make it up above the horizon a good enough distance.
