1) Cool Cities campaign: This campaign which is only about 5 months old has already gotten Sierra Club members around the country working to get their mayors signed on to the US Mayors' Climate Protection agreement and then pushing them to implement solutions to reach the goals through energy efficiency, renewables, greenfleets, and smart growth. Already, we have helped push the number of cities signed on to over 200 mayors representing over 38 million Americans in 32 states. And we are just getting started. We have over 100 Sierra Club volunteers working on this, 8 BEC sites, a handful of chapters, and Cool Cities will be the focus of our Earth Day outreach this year. In addition, we are getting mayors speaking out on the need to act to curb global warming. I would say that is a new constituency that has a fair amount of power.
2) We are working with volunteers and groups around the country who are struggling to fight proposed coal fired power plants in their communities. If we lose on the coal rush, we lose on global warming.
3) We are working in targeted states around the country to hold members of Congress accountable for the lack of a forward looking national energy policy and for the destructive energy legislation that they do come out with.
